A rendering of Bronzeville Winery.

Every week on The Dining Table podcast, David Manilow shares his own experiences from some of Chicago’s best places to eat, drink and shop. Crain’s reporters bring expert insight into all aspects of the city’s restaurant and food scenes. And we welcome chefs, culinary experts, cookbook authors, bartenders, business owners and more to discover what makes them tick.

Driving down Sheffield Avenue between Fullerton Parkway and Armitage Avenue, Manilow stumbled upon a little shack called Red Light Chicken. Intrigued by the carryout restaurant, he figured he’d go home, place an order online and come back to pick it up.

But he couldn’t seem to find a place to order online. His wife eventually found a catering number for the restaurant and called them up.

“Show up and we’ll get you your chicken,” the person on the other end of the call said. “Just show up, it will be fine. We’ll get you your chicken.”

And get them their chicken they did.

“Red Light is just this little chicken shack with like three things on its menu,” Manilow said. “I think we’ve been there like eight times. Chicken’s really good.”

Crain’s restaurant reporter Ally Marotti joined the show to discuss her recent reporting on the changes coming to the Viagra Triangle.

The patch of the Gold Coast where State and Rush streets intersect has long been home to a handful of old-school steakhouses and Italian joints. But in the next six months or so, mainstays Tavern on Rush and Carmine’s will turn off their lights—Tavern permanently and Carmine’s temporarily—ushering in a new era for the popular dining locale.

Eric Williams and Cecilia Cuff have creative visions for the Bronzeville neighborhood.

“We’re really trying to rewrite the history and rewrite a very inclusive history of Bronzeville,” Cuff said on this week’s episode of The Dining Table. “There’s so much as far as arts and culture and just a rich, rich history that we really wanted to look at that and build upon it.”

That’s what drove them to come up with Bronzeville Winery, a space where people can dine, drink and listen to live music.

“You have a whole community of people who live in a neighborhood who have nowhere to go,” said Williams, who also owns the Silver Room and is a Bronzeville resident.

“It was a pretty easy decision,” he said of choosing the location for the winery. “I just wanted to have something that we could have and be able to walk to.”
