After almost 15 years of periodically being available as an exclusive rental at prices that soared as high as $100,000 per month, “Touched by an Angel” star Roma Downey and reality television titan Mark Burnett, nine-time Emmy-winning creator of mega-hits “Survivor” and “Shark Tank” have hoisted one of their several Malibu homes on the market at $22 million. The listing was first reported by The Real Deal.
Set on more than 30 feet of ocean frontage inside the hallowed gates of the fabled Colony enclave, the eight-digit asking price is more than six times the $3.675 million Downey paid for the property in 1999, shortly after the dissolution of her second marriage, to film and television director David Anspaugh, and about seven years before she married Burnett.
Built in the 1963 in a Cape Cod style and owned in the 1990s by powerhouse film and television producer Brian Grazer, the three-story, 3,800-square-foot house is dressed in a casual, comfortable and classically beachy Shabby Chic manner, with lots of distressed wood and white slipcovers.
With several areas to entertain, eat and relax, highlights of the open-plan living space include wide-plank wood floors, a whitewashed brick arched fireplace, and sturdy wood beams on the ceiling. The galley kitchen is up to date with seafoam-green tile backsplashes and a window-lined breakfast area with built-in banquette seating.
Three guest bedrooms share a sitting room on the second floor and a fourth guest bedroom is privately positioned on the third floor, while the ocean-facing main bedroom includes a fireplace, sitting and office areas, and a balcony with ship-like horizon views.
There’s a wind-protected patio at the front of the house and French doors open the main living space to the petite but well-stocked backyard where there’s a covered dining terrace with built-in ceiling heaters, a built-in barbecue and plunge pool accented with colored Spanish tiles. Beyond the pool, an elevated deck has plenty of room for sun loungers and a dining table. And, of course, there’s direct access to the sand and surf.
The property is available through Susan Monus at Coldwell Banker Realty.
The Colony has always been popular with rich and famous folk — think Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Sting and Trudie Styler, Ed Norton, and Eric Schmidt — and lately there’s been an influx of new, high-profile money. Jonah Hill recently dropped $15.5 million for an ocean front fixer-upper; Ron Burkle coughed up $13.5 million for one of the earliest homes built in the Colony; heiress Anne Hearst and writer Jay McInerney paid $10.7 million for their dated but well-maintained oceanfront home.
Downey, all but retired from acting — her most recent credits are as a producer on Christian-themed TV shows, and Burnett, now Chairman of MGM Worldwide Television, own at least two other homes in Malibu. Burnett sold an oceanfront home on Malibu Road last year for $11.7 million but they still own a home on popular Point Dume, which was acquired about five years ago for $4.125 million, as well as a spectacular multi-acre bluff-top estate above Paradise Cove they scooped up in 2005 for $25 million from late film producer, talent manager and high-end house flipper Sandy Gallin.
