PARKERSBURG — A special Blennerhassett tour about food will be featured in July at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park.

The program emphasis is on food and the role it played in the daily lives of the Blennerhassett family through the Saturday History Series with a special Mansion Foodways Tour set for 10:30 a.m. July 16.

Foods of the early 19th century will be explored. Visitors will learn more about the role of food at social entertainments, how to properly set the early 19th century dining table, appropriate table etiquette, the cooking methods for hearth cookery, and more. Some historic recipes for food dishes on display at the Blennerhassett dinner table will be provided to each participant so they can try them at home using these modern interpretations.

“These summer monthly Saturday History Programs give the public a chance to learn more about different aspects of the Blennerhassett Family,” said Craig Pyles, Park Superintendent. “It’s another good reason to visit this park.”

This educational and informative tour will be led by food historians and authors, Martha and Dick Hartley. They have written two early Western Virginia foodways books — The Frontier Table and Serving Up History.

Island guests wanting to be a part of this specific program must take the first boat to the Island leaving Point Park at 10 a.m. July 16. This tour begins promptly after the boat arrives at the Island and starts near the Island Ticket Booth. Cost of this one-hour event is $5 per adult plus boat transportation to the Island.
